Closed Reduction and Casting

Closed reduction is the process of realigning broken bones through exterior means and without the use of surgery. In most cases, the doctor will apply force to the bone in a manner exactly opposite to that which originally injured it. This can be very painful and analgesia is suggested in certain cases. Although this will temporarily aggravate the condition, it will soon provide significant relief from soft tissue damage and reduce inflammatory response. Once the reduction has been completed, it is usually followed up with some sort of immobilization, either through fixation, casting or traction.
