A Hoffman procedure is performed to treat rheumatoid arthritis, hammertoes, severe bunions and diabetic conditions within the foot by removing all of the metatarsal heads. This helps to eliminate the bony ends that often develop and also to change the weight-bearing surface on the bottom of the foot. By shortening the metatarsals, weight is shifted to an area of the foot with more support.
Most patients experience significant pain relief from this procedure and do not require additional treatment for their condition. Your doctor will decide whether or not this procedure is right for you.
