Princeton Orthopaedic Associates offers steroid and viscosupplementation injections as an advanced treatment option for arthritis and other types of joint pain that haven’t responded well to other therapies, such as exercise and oral pain medication. These injections are considered safe for nearly all patients and provide relief at the source of the pain.
We provide corticosteroid injections to relieve inflammation of a joint. Some injections may include the use of a local anesthetic to reduce discomfort. The steroid is then injected directly into the affected joint. The relief can last anywhere from a few days to a few months.
Viscosupplementation is made from a substance called hyaluronan, which is naturally found in healthy joint fluid. The substance is used to make viscosupplementation such as Orthovisc, Euflexxa, and Hyalgan. This fluid is used to cushion and lubricate the knee to relieve pain and swelling.
Viscosupplementation can be administered weekly. It can provide pain relief for up to six months, depending on the type of injection and the patient’s response.
